I was therefore wondering, if you could help me with some of your opinions on the matter. These are some of the issues at hand: - Can we still talk of such a thing as an 'academic identity' today? - If so, what are the its defining criteria? - Is is better to talk of 'academic identity' in the singular or 'academic identities' in the plural? Where does the difference lie between the two phrases? If the latter applies (academic identities), is there still a defining thread running throughout these identities? And what are the 'dividing' factors? - If you think that the notion of 'academic identity/ies' is going through a crisis today, what are the factors contributing to its erosion? - Do you think that 'academic identity' is a social more than a personal construct? Or it both? How do we arrive at defining our 'academic identity/ies'? - Is is right to talk of people working on Higher Education as 'academics' or 'professionals', or both? Why/Why not? Of course, the field is huge and demands lots of time for reflection and I can't ask you for that. However, if you would like to jot down a few thoughts of yours and let them known to me (by means of answering this message), I'd be most grateful...
